When Should Your Child First Visit The Dentist?
In children dentistry, one of the most important decisions parents have to make regarding their child’s health is when to take them for their first visit to the dentist. At Connolly Dental, we recommend bringing your child in for a checkup and cleaning as early as possible, ideally before they turn one year old. It is recommended your children see a dentist every 6 months after their first visit.
The 3 most important reasons, your child needs to visit the dentist.
- It gives us a chance to get to know your child and establish a relationship with them. This is important because it can make future visits – which may be for more extensive treatment – less daunting and more comfortable for both you and your child.
- We can help you get ahead of any potential problems by catching them early. This is especially important when it comes to cavities, which are much easier to treat in the early stages.
- Regular checkups and cleanings help your child get into the habit of good oral hygiene, which will serve them well into adulthood.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is recommended that children see a dentist for the first time around the age of 1 or when their first tooth appears.
Starting dental check-ups early helps to prevent problems, identify any potential issues, and ensure that children have good oral health habits that will last a lifetime.
Ideally, children should visit the dentist every six months to ensure that their teeth and mouth stay healthy. During these visits, the dentist will clean the child’s teeth, check for any issues or cavities, and provide preventive treatments such as fluoride applications.
When children reach the age of 7 or 8, the dentist may recommend that they receive orthodontic treatment such as braces. This is because their adult teeth have usually come in by this age and can be assessed for any misalignment issues that need to be corrected with braces.
For toddlers, it is important to use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride is an important component of oral health and helps protect the teeth from cavities.
Parents can help their child maintain good oral health by supervising their brushing and flossing, providing healthy food choices, and scheduling regular dental check-ups. Additionally, they can model good oral health habits themselves.
Some common problems that children face with their teeth include cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. Other problems can include misaligned teeth, thumb-sucking, and early or late loss of baby teeth. Regular dental check-ups can help prevent and address these problems.
If your child has a toothache, it is important to bring them to the dentist as soon as possible. The dentist will be able to determine the cause of the pain and provide any necessary treatment. If your child experiences severe pain or swelling, you should contact an emergency dentist right away for immediate care.
